The highly anticipated guest acting awards saw Carbonell presented with his Emmy by Jamie Lee Curtis, who was herself a nominee in the guest actress in a comedy category. Carbonell’s fellow nominees for best guest actor in a drama series included some heavyweight contenders: Paul Dano and John Turturro for Mr. & Mrs. Smith (Prime Video), Tracy Letts for Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty (HBO/Max), and Jonathan Pryce for Slow Horses (Apple TV+).

Upon receiving his award, Carbonell delivered a heartfelt speech, expressing deep gratitude to his wife, Shannon Kenny, an actress who stepped away from her career to focus on their family. “I want to thank Shannon,” Carbonell began. “My wife is here tonight. She’s an incredible actress who worked for 25 years in film, television, and theater. After our second son was born, she chose to leave her career behind to focus on motherhood, so I could pursue what I love. This award, honey, is shared with you.”

Carbonell also reflected on what the role of Rodrigues in Shogun meant to him in a previous interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “Being part of Shogun was an extraordinary experience from start to finish,” he shared. “It’s rare to play a character so different from yourself—physically, I grew this gnarly beard and gained weight, and I had to master a Castilian accent. Usually, I have to hire my own dialect coach because it’s not always covered in the budget, but for Shogun, they spared no expense.”

Meanwhile, Michaela Coel was honored for her stellar guest appearance as Bev in Mr. & Mrs. Smith but was not present at the ceremony. Coel’s win came in a competitive field, with nominees such as Claire Foy (The Crown, Netflix), Marcia Gay Harden (The Morning Show, Apple TV+), Sarah Paulson (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Prime Video), and Parker Posey (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Prime Video).

The 2024 Creative Arts Emmys spotlighted a wide range of talent across two nights, with Carbonell and Coel’s wins marking standout moments. The evening celebrated not just individual achievements but also the collaborative spirit of television production, where meticulous performances in guest roles can leave a lasting impact on audiences.

For fans of Shogun and Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Carbonell and Coel’s wins serve as reminders of the exceptional work being done in guest-starring roles, as these actors brought unforgettable performances to the screen. With both actors continuing to make waves in their respective fields, their Emmys signal the exciting prospects ahead in their careers.
