Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson recently reminisced about her time in a Harvard drama class with Matt Damon, revealing a memorable encounter from their university days. In an engaging interview with CBS Sunday Morning, Jackson shared the story of their brief but notable interaction during their academic years.
Jackson, who was a drama student at Harvard, recounted how she and Damon were paired as scene partners for a class assignment. Although they never performed together in front of an audience, the experience left a lasting impression on Jackson. “It was quite thrilling to be his scene partner,” she told Norah O’Donnell. “Matt was already gaining some recognition on campus, so it was a bit of a big deal to be working with him in class.”
The scene they were assigned was from Samuel Beckett’s iconic play Waiting for Godot. Jackson vividly remembered the class evaluation, where the professor praised her performance, saying, “Ketanji, you were very good. Matt, we’ll talk.” Reflecting on the moment, Jackson admitted, “I couldn’t believe it—I had outperformed Matt Damon in that scene.”
Despite Jackson’s detailed recollection, Matt Damon did not immediately remember their time together. The Associated Press reached out to him for his perspective, and while he did not recall the specific class, he responded enthusiastically, saying, “That’s so cool!”
Ketanji Brown Jackson graduated from Harvard with a degree in government in 1992, and later earned her juris doctor from the same institution in 1996. Meanwhile, Damon, who had started making waves with his acting career, left Harvard just shy of completing his degree to pursue his role in Geronimo: An American Legend. He subsequently gained fame for his roles in numerous critically acclaimed films and won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, which he co-wrote with his friend and frequent collaborator Ben Affleck for Good Will Hunting.
