Join the Los Angeles Times for an invigorating winter hike in Elysian Park. As we look ahead to March, it feels like the right moment to break away from indoor confinement and reconnect with the great outdoors. Particularly since January’s fires kept many of us cooped up, it’s time to reclaim the fresh air and scenic views that L.A. has to offer.

I’ve always found that hiking is an excellent way to restore my spirit. While I often venture out alone, I’ve discovered that hiking with a group can be a refreshing experience—especially when sharing the trail with fellow outdoor enthusiasts I haven’t met yet. It’s truly about bonding over a mutual appreciation for nature.

On Saturday, March 8, at 9 a.m., I’m inviting 30 L.A. Times subscribers to join me for a memorable reader hike. This hike marks the kickoff of our subscriber-only hiking event series, following previous adventures that took us through the Lower Arroyo Seco Trail and the Gabrielino Trail.

This time, we’re exploring the Elysian Park West Loop, an easy 2.4-mile trail that offers mostly flat stretches mixed with gentle inclines. It’s a personal favorite of mine for introducing newcomers to L.A. because it provides both a nature-filled escape and stunning cityscapes. Expect to see beautiful sights such as portions of the L.A. River, Dodger Stadium, and the iconic downtown skyline. The blend of sounds—the soothing birdsongs alongside the distant hum of freeway traffic, plus the tantalizing aromas of wild sage and barbecue—makes the experience distinctly L.A.

Our meeting point will be at the trailhead on Elysian Park Drive, just off Stadium Way. Park at the Grace E. Simons Lodge, then stroll back down Elysian Park Drive until you spot the trailhead on your left. Please note that there are no restrooms along the route, but you can use the facilities at the lodge before we set off.

As we begin our hike, I’ll lead a few gentle stretches to get our muscles ready. Along the way, I’ll share insights about the area’s geography and history. We anticipate the hike will take around two hours at a leisurely pace.

Be sure to wear comfortable shoes, bring a hat, apply sunscreen, and pack plenty of water. Feel free to bring your leashed dogs along; I know some of my colleagues will be bringing theirs. (Cats, unfortunately, don’t seem to enjoy hiking as much!)

This event is complimentary for the first 30 subscribers who register. Participants must be at least 18 years old and sign a waiver before joining the hike. Secure your spot by signing up on eventbrite.com.

I look forward to seeing you out there!
