Jeff Baena, the acclaimed indie filmmaker known for his innovative works such as Life After Beth and The Little Hours, has tragically passed away at the age of 47. According to a report from the County of Los Angeles Medical Examiner, Baena’s death was ruled a suicide. He was discovered at his home on January 3, with details revealing he died by hanging.

 

Born on June 29, 1977, Baena was a prominent figure in independent cinema and gained recognition for his unique storytelling and creative vision. He was married to actress and producer Aubrey Plaza in 2021. In addition to his notable films, he was also responsible for Joshy (2016), Horse Girl (2020), and Spin Me Round (2022), and co-wrote the 2004 film I Heart Huckabees.

 

After completing his studies at NYU Film School, Baena relocated to Los Angeles, where he began his career as a production assistant for Robert Zemeckis and later became an assistant editor for director David O. Russell. His television work includes the Showtime series Cinema Toast, which he created, wrote, directed, and executive produced.

 

The news of Baena’s unexpected passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from the industry. Comedian Marc Maron expressed his sorrow on social media, calling Baena a “true artist and sweet guy.” The Sundance Film Festival shared their condolences, emphasizing the impact of Baena’s storytelling and his lasting contributions to the cinematic community.
